The Shady Motel in Caliente has been family-owned for three genrations and has served travellers for nearly 50 years.

The business was founded in 1963 by Ronal and Betty Young, as they constructed ?a few kitchenettes,? according to their grandson and current owner, Nolan Avery. ?His aunt and uncle ran the motel starting in the late 70s, and his parents took it over in 1986. ?Avery and his wife, Teva, have been running things since 2003.

Each owner has left his or her mark on the businesses, which now has 40 rooms.

?We?ve all done our own little legacy with the business,? Avery said.

The current owners plan to add a continental breakfast, in-house laundry, and rental bikes in the coming months. ?Avery takes pride in taking care of his customers. ??We greet them politely and take good care of them,? he said, adding they look forward to to serving the county and its visitors for a long time to come.
