Students participate in Boat Float race

The annual Boat Float for Panaca, Pioche, and Caliente sixth-grade students was held Sept. 12 at the Panaca Spring. The students made boats from cardboard and lots of duct tape. Each student came up with his or her own design and built the boat. They had to paddle their boat across the spring, around a buoy, and then back to the stairs.

A solo and a doubles competition was held. The first place winner of the solo competition was Dean Ottley from Panaca with a time of 1:14. Second place was Kyle Delmue from Pioche with a time of 1:48.

Third place was Ashton Miller from Panaca with a time of 1:49.

The doubles competition first place winner was Jonathan Kramer and Trevin Perkins from Panaca with a time of 1:05. Second place was Sadie Soderborg and Hailey Hooge from Panaca with a time of 1:06.

Third place was Sara Decker and Kylie Truman from Caliente with a time of 1:30.

Making the boats and floating them was a lot harder than these students may have thought. Keeping your balance while paddling in a straight line is tricky. The event was well-attended by parents and everyone enjoyed the competition.
