Five local cowgirls from Lincoln County have competed in the Southern Nevada Gymkhana Association, and received a number of awards from the banquet held Dec. 21, 2013 at the Elks Lodge in Las Vegas. The association promotes ?equestrian sportsmanship and family fun,? according to their website, www.snga.biz, and is open to all ages.
The association hosts 10 Gymkhanas and other events over the course of the year, and participants must compete in at least 8 to earn points for the year-end awards. Our local ladies sometimes traveled twice a month for the competitions.
Taking home the ?all around? award for the 17 to 33 age group was Casey Simmers from Alamo.
Ashley Rollins from Caliente won reserved, and was awarded two saddles, even after losing a horse and having to ride a new one. Ashley?s daughter, Faith Griffin, won sixth overall for her 11 and under age group, and won a wide variety of supplies, including a belt buckle, halters and other tack, and a personally engraved knife for ?most improved rider.? Faith rides a bay horse, Merna.
In the 34 to 48 age group, Robin Simmers from Alamo took home the reserve award and also brought home a saddle.
Last but not least, Dawn Wade from Hiko won third overall in the 49 and over age group.
Robin Simmers said, ?We have a lot of fun and it is a way to spend time with family and friends in friendly competition.?
The group gives many thanks to those who helped donate and sponsor the women on their venture. Rollins gave a big thanks to Dawn Wade, who hauled the horses for them each event.
Congratulations to all our winners, and best of luck for 2014.
