The Lincoln County School District approved an assistant principal for Caliente Elementary during its regular board meeting on October 8.
Sharon Dirks was approved for the position with a 4-1 vote. Patrick Kelley voted for no. During discussion, Kelley pushed to have a full-time principal at the Pioche Elementary instead and stated that he feels Pioche deserves better than having individuals as principal part time.
Superintendent Steve Hansen said that Dirks would be mentored part-time in her new position and that this was not meant as a disservice to Pioche. He stated that the purpose of the position is to make sure Dirks can be trained and so someone with authority can be at Caliente Elementary if principal Cherry Florence is unavailable.
Florence stated during the discussion that she believes this is good for Caliente Elementary because of the growing size of the classrooms and number of students there. Kelley disagreed and stated he does not think Caliente Elementary needs an assistant principal as much as Pioche Elementary needs a stable and full-time principal. Board member Peggy Rowe stated she is not against the assistant principal position but that she agrees with Kelley that Pioche Elementary needs someone full time, adding that it is not fair to staff and students.
In other business the board approved advertising for two grant-funded instructional coach positions that will last for one year.
The board approved the hiring of Tammy Beckstrand as a preschool paraprofessional, Caralee Frehner as an adult education teacher, Jamie Cole as a full-time elementary parapro and Cherie Whitney was approved as a part- time middle school parapro.
The board also approved the hiring of Tiffany Kelly, under her company ed10x, to provide district-wide technology support. Kelly will provide these services nine days per month at a cost of $80 per hour, or as needed.
