Halloween Carnival as popular as ever

Another Halloween has passed, like it does every year. An odd custom, isn?t it? The only day of the year it is completely acceptable for kids, dressed up in costumes of all kinds, to go up to a total stranger?s door and ask for candy. But we did it ourselves, so not to complain.

And this year again, as for many past years, the multi-purpose room at Pahranagat Valley High School played host to the annual Halloween Carnival.

Kids from all over town, many who went trick-or-treating in the various neighborhoods, showed up at the carnival as well, for even more fun.

School principal Mike Strong said ?It?s a tradition to do this, so you just keep it going. It?s a really good fund raiser for the classes, and it?s a pretty good event for the community.? He thought the event might have been going on for 20 years or better.

Strong explained that mostly it is organized by the senior class, but the freshman, sophomores and juniors are involved too. Each class buys a booth or more at the carnival and all the proceeds they earn from whatever game or activity they have going, goes into a fund for their given class.

The response is quite good, with the kids dressed up in costumes and parents looking after the little ones.

This year, since the high school rodeo was also happening over the weekend, about 30 or more of the competitors attended as well, with most wanting to go through the haunted house.

Strong said the event is growing in notoriety and popularity with out of town people, too. ?We?ve had people come from Las Vegas, one family from Carlin, even the Pioche area. It?s an alternative to going out on the street, even though it is safe to go out on the street in Alamo. It just becomes part of Halloween here.?
