On Flag Day, June 14, with a slight breeze blowing, the veterans and Ladies Auxiliary from VFW Post 7114 in Caliente met at Grover C. Dils Medical Center to pass out poppies and flags to the residents who had gathered on the back patio.
The color guard marched into the area, and Post Commander Larry Wimsatt and Quartermaster Jack Horner raised the flag as the residents sang the Star Spangled Banner and then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Among the residents was a lieutenant commander in the Coast Guard, Army veterans and a mother who had a son in each branch of the service.
The ceremony ended with visiting and hugs.
This is one of the many community events that the Caliente VFW takes part in. The color guard consisted of Bud Sanders and Joe Slayton. Auxiliary members present were President Sharon Wimsatt, Alice Rodowick, Lisa Revell and Vicki Horner.
