The Pahranagat Valley Fire District met on Oct. 16.

Ryan Rhodes, the ambulance coordinator, reported that Tim Vande Sluis is now certified as an Advanced EMT and Sarah Judd is now certified as a Basic EMT. The Hiko barn will be cleaned twice this month and then once a month from here on out. Rhodes plans on following up with Bound Tree about supplies for the third ambulance, since the order hasn’t arrived yet.

Steve Meldrum talked with Grover C. Dils hospital about transporting patients. The hospital noted that it’s too much money and that the proposal has to go through the board.

Rhodes commented that a recent transport to St. George took two volunteers a seven-hour round trip. There are currently no protocols in place concerning transport to St. George. Typically, transports are only done to Caliente or Las Vegas.

Mesquite was contacted about assisting with transports to St. George but, given that they only have three ambulances for their area, Mesquite responded that it can only help during life-threatening situations. The issue will remain on the agenda for future discussion.

In the fire chief report, Lonny Walch stated that the training for firefighters has been going well. He has a checklist of items to complete. By the end, trainees will have Entry Level Firefighter (ELF) certification.

With grant funding, Walch ordered two turnout coats and pants, six radios, gloves and hoods and fifteen helmet lights. Walch also ordered one more turnout and pants as well as some firefighting hand tools.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee drill was held on Oct. 18 in Caliente. There was also a mock Hazmat drill with table-top scenarios involving a pretend leak at the Thompson Petroleum plant. Grover C. Dils was also doing an earthquake drill.

In district management, there were thirteen calls last month. Only five were billable and a couple were canceled en route.

The board approved the annual audit presented by Bret Whipple. The district made just under $30,000 over the budgeted amount for the 2018 fiscal year, with a net worth of $455,207.
