Starting the season at the Early Bird Bulldog Invitational at Virgin Valley High in Mesquite last week, the four-member Panther girls team scored 19 points in the meet. Meanwhile, the Panther boys scored three points in a 13-team field.

For the Lady Panthers, junior McKenzie Poulsen, the defending 1A girls state long jump and triple jump champion, won the triple jump event at 29-11. Her personal record is 31-5½, set last year at the state meet. Her older brother, Austin, holds the Pahranagat Valley High School (PVHS) boys and 1A state record of 45-00, set in 2013.

The PVHS girls school and 1A state record is 35-3 by Tawna Hardy in 1994.

In the long jump event in Mesquite, Poulsen took third place at 14-2.

Coach Wade Poulsen said, “I thought everybody did really good. For their very first meet, all performed very well with limited practices, and we’re looking forward to seeing some great things this year.”
