A Second Moon in the Sky

September 27, 2024 by Lincoln County Record

Submitted by the Lincoln County Adventure Center

September 2024 is set to be a month unlike any other as Earth will have a second moon. A mini-moon asteroid called 2024 PT5 will enter the Earth’s atmosphere on September 29.

According to a paper published in the Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society this month, the 2024 PT5 asteroid will be in the grasp of Earth’s gravity until Nov 25. After following a horseshoe-like path around our planet it will return to an orbit around the sun.

The allure of Lincoln County’s dark skies make this an ideal destination for any stargazing enthusiast.

Lincoln County is renowned for its pristine dark skies, providing an incredible backdrop for viewing the Milky Way and other celestial highlights including the moon. Unfortunately, the “mini-moon” Asteroid 2024 PT5 is well beyond the limits of the eyes and most telescopes and cameras. Astrophotographers may capture images with professional equipment, though the mini-moon will be too faint for most amateurs to see, even in Lincoln County.

Despite the challenges of seeing 2024 PT5, Lincoln County offers some of the best dark sky experiences to enhance your celestial adventure. Lincoln County’s rural viewing locations allow for optimal stargazing away from light pollution. Even if the mini-moon is elusive, the night sky will still dazzle you with the Milky Way and other astronomical wonders.

To make the most of any celestial experience, be sure to plan ahead. While you might not have the right telescope for the mini-moon, bringing viewing equipment like telescopes and cameras can allow you to try your hand at astrophotography. Be sure to bring blankets or warm clothing and snacks for a cozy night under the stars. Remember to keep an eye on weather forecasts leading up to any night sky event, aim for nights with clear skies.

While spotting the mini-moon asteroid 2024 PT5 may be a challenge, the allure of Lincoln County’s dark skies makes it an ideal destination for any stargazing enthusiast. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the night sky and enjoy the magic of the cosmos. Lincoln County Adventure Center invites you to discover our dark skies and enjoy the cosmic beauty that unfolds overhead.
