The Shady Motel has been an oasis of comfort for over 60 years in Caliente, providing memories for people all across the United States and abroad.

The Shady Motel is a Caliente staple. A family-owned establishment, this motel has been in the area for more than 60 years.
The charming motel, a third generation mom and pop business, is currently owned by Nolan and Teva Avery.
The motel was purchased by Nolan’s grandfather, Ronnie Young, in 1963. According to Nolan, there was an adobe building already on the property and his grandfather added on to it for his growing family.
Young’s first few motel units were also made of adobe. Later the motel was passed to his son Johnathan and his wife Sandra Young, who ran the business from 1975 until 1985. During this time, the facility was upgraded to 15 units. It was sold in 1985 to Ronnie Young’s son-in-law, John L Avery, and his wife, Lorraine. The couple ran it until 2000, when the motel was passed to Nolan and Teva.
With a few renovations, additions and upgrades, the Averys now have 38 rooms, a new office, a hospitality area, a barbecue, a green space and a great staff!
Nolan said, “Folks have a laugh with the ‘shady puns,’ so we have fun ‘shady’ T-shirts here for guests to purchase. We enjoy making people smile and helping accommodate anything they need. We love how our first-time guests enjoy Caliente and want to come back.”
The Averys will be celebrating 25 years of ownership in April of 2025. Congratulations!
