Laughter echoed across the expansive Delamar Dry Lake Beds as children from the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, servicing Lincoln County, spread out across the vast desert floor on Nov. 23. The club’s field trip was more than just a day away from the routine: it was a blend of exploration and play.
With the sun high in the sky, the group enjoyed picnic lunches and played games on the dry, cracked terrain. The children sprinted across the lake bed identifying footprints from the last rain. They gathered to take on a unique challenge of assembling small robots in the middle of the desert. As the afternoon wore on, the excitement began to build for what the group knew would be the day’s grand finale.

Just as the sun dipped toward the horizon, the unmistakable rumble of engines began to fill the air. The children paused, eyes wide, as CJ-130s and CJ-17s appeared in the distance. Their massive frames shimmered against the evening light. Slowly, the aircraft descended, landing on the dry lake bed with a controlled force that kicked up plumes of dust.
The children watched in awe, their robot projects forgotten, as the military training exercise unfolded. The quiet desert was alive with the hum of technology and the excitement of witnessing something extraordinary. The field trip was a chance for the children to connect with the wonders of the natural and modern world.
Club staff handed out the last of their Thanksgiving box meals after the trip. A dozen families were provided with essentials for their holiday meals.
Site coordinator Brittni Almaraz and her team are looking ahead as they reflect on the success of recent efforts. The Panaca club will host a virtual parent night Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. The event will highlight upcoming programs, including the Torch Club, Teen Room and basketball for first through sixth graders. “We want to share our goals and what’s on schedule,” said Almaraz. “Any and all questions are welcome.”
