Embrace the festivities of the holiday season by cutting your own Christmas tree in Lincoln County. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) invites families to enjoy this timeless tradition as they escape into nature to create lasting memories.
Each household may harvest up to two trees, and you’ll need to carry a printed copy of your permit during your trip. Permits cost just $5 per tree. Visit forestproducts.blm.gov and select “Ely District” to secure yours. When harvesting, remember to cut responsibly and follow road and weather advisories. Cut trees should be no taller than 15 feet, with a stump height of less than 12 inches.

After selecting a tree, enjoy the charm of Lincoln County’s cozy inns and local restaurants. Extend your stay with an overnight trip to a local inn or Airbnb, and immerse yourself in the area’s winter activities like exploring snow-dusted trails or relaxing around a crackling fire.
To keep Christmas trees fresh and safe, make a cut at the tree’s base and place it in water immediately. An average tree can consume up to a gallon of water per day, so be sure to water often. Avoid placing trees near heat sources like fireplaces or vents. Using miniature lights produces less heat and reduces the risk of drying out your tree. Never leave the lights on unattended. Turn off lights when leaving the home or going to bed. Also, promptly dispose of trees after the holiday season to prevent further fire hazards.Cutting your own Christmas tree is more than a chore, it’s creating an unforgettable experience.
