Panther wrestlers compete in Chaparral Invitational; ball teams defeat Beaver Dam

The Pahranagat Valley boys and girls wrestling teams competed in the Chaparral Invitational at Valley High School in Las Vegas Jan. 17-18. There were nine mats running during the event. The boys team, with 10 wrestlers, came in 18th place out of 32 teams, and the girls team, with three wrestlers, came in 21st place out of 29 teams. 

Ali Lasike and Rio Hughes came in fifth place, and AJ Thornton came in fourth place. Coach Dominique Slone said, “This was another great experience for everyone and great mat time.”

The boys wrestling team will meet next in West Wendover on Jan. 23 for divisionals. The girls wrestling team will meet next on Jan. 24-25 in Las Vegas at Bonanza High School for qualifiers.

The boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Beaver Dam on Jan. 18. 

The girls defeated the Diamondbacks 41-30. 

The boys caught fire on their way to a 60-37 win. Flint Higbee hit 5 three-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points. Braxten Tsosie hit 3 three-pointers and scored 11. Jesse Stewart scored 11 points and Ryder Pearson scored 9. The team scored 10 three-pointers overall. 

Head Coach Michael Strong said, “I’m most proud of our improvement at the free throw line. We made 10/14 from the stripe. The boys are playing well. They are playing for each other. It was a fun night for us and a fun week of basketball.” 

The teams traveled on Tuesday, Jan. 21 to Panaca, each losing to the Lynx. 

The Panthers next play Friday, Jan. 24 at home against Sandy Valley.
