The Lincoln County Commissioners met Feb. 3 to discuss current county initiatives and funding allocations. 

Commissioners Diane Path and Mike Reese joined Chairwoman Janine Woodworth at the courthouse, while Commissioners Lisa Poulsen and Keith Pearson attended virtually.

One key discussion centered on a federal funding pause and its impact on local programs. Commissioners reviewed a list of affected programs, identifying those that may continue and those at risk of being discontinued.

Chairwoman Woodworth acknowledged the community’s concerns, stating, “We know it’s a scary thing when we have a little county that depends on these funds.” The discussion was tabled until the next meeting as commissioners await more details on the pause and its potential effects.

Commissioners appointed Varlin Higbee to the Lincoln County Planning Commission. Many thanked the former commissioner for continuing to share his knowledge and experience with the county.

Commissioners approved a letter of support to the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Grant Program for the GEM Theater. Later an MOU was approved for Robert Weidner to serve as Washington, D.C. government relations advisor for Lincoln County and other counties of the Rural Public Lands Council.

In financial matters, the commissioners approved $130,000 from the Land Act fund to be allocated to Lincoln County Solid Waste, with transfers to be made as needed. The Solid Waste department has been operating at a deficit and previously advocated for a $6 monthly fee to help cover costs.

Additionally, $500,000 from the general fund was allocated to the Lincoln County Detention Center for operational needs. Sheriff Derek Foremaster expressed appreciation for the funding, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the county jail to house both local inmates and detainees from other law enforcement agencies.

The temporary funding measures received unanimous support from all commissioners. Further budget discussions are planned for upcoming meetings, where commissioners will evaluate additional fiscal adjustments.
