A Panaca family of seven lost their home and nearly all their belongings in a fire on Sunday, March 2.
The fire broke out just after 1 p.m. at the residence of Scott and Sydney Mathews. The Panaca Fire Department responded within five minutes, with Pioche Fire also sending a unit to assist. Despite their efforts, the Mathews’ home was completely destroyed.

No statement has been made yet regarding the cause of the fire. The fire department had been in contact with the residents the night before regarding a controlled burn on the property. Firefighters had offered assistance in extinguishing the flames if needed. It is unclear if the controlled burn was related to the fire that destroyed the home.
When firefighters returned the next afternoon, they found flames near an ATV parked next to a large metal barn. The family’s wooden living space within the barn was fully engulfed. Fire crews were able to contain a nearby brushfire before it spread to other structures. Though no injuries were reported, the family lost nearly everything but the clothes on their back.
Community members have come together to support the Mathews family. A potato bar fundraiser dinner has been organized for March 10 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Panaca LDS Church. A bake sale will also take place at the event.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family with rebuilding. By mid-week, donations had already surpassed half of the fundraising goal. Those who wish to contribute can donate at https://gofund.me/a250fdc9.
