The past few weeks have been a roller coaster for the baseball and softball athletes of Lincoln County High School, with each team being an almost perfect mirror of the other.
For baseball, it was an alright start out of the gate as they took down the Pahranagat Valley Panthers 22-11 on March 7. However, despite this auspicious beginning, the next few games saw the team fall to the North Sevier Wolves twice, 12-6 and 9-4. Even the Panthers got their chance at revenge when they took down the Lynx, 24-12. But when the Lynx fell to the Liberty Baptist Academy Knights, 20-10, enough was enough. The next game, once again against the Liberty Knights, saw a fire out of the Lynx that hasn’t been there since the beginning of the season.
LBA took an early lead, getting three runs up on LCHS, but after keeping up with the Knights for the next inning, the third inning saw the Lynx jump ahead by a run. After that, it was an intense game that saw the Lynx drive ahead further and further. Even when the Knights finally scored again in the seventh inning, it was too little too late, and the Lynx finally took their second win of the season, 9-6.
The tide had turned, and when the Lynx faced their next opponents, the Green Valley Christian Guardians, it was a completely one-sided affair. The first game saw the Lynx walk away victorious, 20-1, while the second game saw them win, 20-5.
With this winning streak under their belt, the boys’ next challenge will be against the White Pine Bobcats on March 21.
As for the girls, things started out promisingly. After a 16-6 win over their neighbors to the south, the PVHS Panthers, they went on to defeat the Virgin Valley Bulldogs, the Moapa Valley Pirates and PVHS, all within the same two days. But their winning streak came to an end when they faced off against the Grand County Red Devils out of Moab, Utah. Immediately, the Red Devils took a nine-run lead, which the Lynx had no answer for until the third inning, where LCHS got a five-run series. However, even though the Red Devils did not score much at all the rest of the game, their lead sustained them as the Lynx scrambled to close the gap. Unfortunately for the Lynx, they suffered their first loss of the season, 8-12.
This marked the beginning of a series of losses to the Skyridge Falcons, Carbon Dinos, Union Cougars and Bonneville Bees. While this was a hard series of losses, a few players recognized that they were a learning experience and said they were proud of the effort they had put in. Their next game will see them facing the White Pine Bobcats as well on the 21st.
