This last week was the annual trip to San Diego for the sixth graders of Lincoln County. Two buses loaded with students and parents from Panaca, Caliente and Alamo departed March 26 for a four-day trip of service projects, education and fun.
On the first day of the trip, after a long bus ride, everyone offloaded at Mission Beach for ocean fun and rides at Belmont Park.

Lincoln County sixth graders enjoyed a four-day trip to San Diego, filled with service, education and fun.
Day two started early with a service project at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The students and parents spent the morning cleaning headstones in the oldest part of the cemetery in preparation for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. The group cleaned the section with veterans from World War I, World War II and the Korean War.
One of the Rosecrans caretakers expressed his appreciation for the students being willing to work on the headstones. He said he was so impressed by how hard they worked. He added that volunteers are always welcome and appreciated, and if anyone wants to volunteer in the future, they only need to call Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and make an appointment.
The next stop was the aircraft carrier USS Midway. The students explored the ship and learned about the Battle of Midway and how the ship got its name. They also saw how the sailors lived on the ship and gained an understanding of their experiences. After the visit to the USS Midway, the buses dropped everyone off in Old Town San Diego for shopping and dinner.
Day three started with the San Diego Zoo, where the students learned about many different kinds of animals and their habitats. The day ended with a trip to Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. The students and parents were given a behind-the-scenes look at the ballpark, such as press areas, under the stadium where the players are and field level, where the players were having batting practice. The students and parents then watched the Padres defeat the Atlanta Braves, 4-3.
Day four was the long trek back to Lincoln County. Students and parents expressed appreciation for all the work that went into organizing the successful trip.
