Imagine two flat and smooth pieces of metal sliding or rubbing against each other. Because of the friction between the two, they don’t slide very well. They can also create a lot of heat and wear. Now imagine adding oil between the two surfaces. The two pieces of metal move much more freely as a result.Car
Think of your engine oil as a barrier, protecting the hundreds of metal engine parts moving together at a high revolving speed. Oil is a very effective barrier to engine wear. In fact, its surface tension actually prevents the metal parts in your engine from even touching.
Not only does oil reduce friction, it also helps to cool your engine. As much as 40 percent of an engine’s heat is removed from the combustion chamber area. Also, oil helps to keep your engine internals clean by removing carbon and other deposits to be trapped in the oil filter. This is why regular oil change intervals are critical. There are many small oil passageways inside an engine, and if they are not kept clean, these passages will clog and the engine will fail.
How often does your engine oil need to be changed? The correct answer is always what the vehicle manufacturer recommends. You can find this information in your vehicle owner’s manual. A typical recommendation for a passenger car or pickup truck is every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. Recommended intervals can be as far as every 5,000 miles, and some diesel engines go as far as every 10,000. But don’t push it; you don’t want to become the owner of an expensive paperweight.
The oil type or viscosity typically used today is 5W-30 for most gasoline-powered passenger cars and pickup trucks. Diesel engines typically require a heavier weight: 15W-40. Modern engines are built with tighter tolerances, and you will see engine weights changing (ex. 0W-20). Be sure to check which is correct (and the amount needed) for your engine by referring to your vehicle’s owner’s manual, or look to see if it is printed on your engine oil cap. Regularly check your dipstick to ensure that you have the correct engine oil level, and always change the oil filter when you service your engine.
