Each year, the students at Pahranagat Elementary School look forward to the end-of-year barbecue. As school comes to a close, the PVES staff and parent volunteers serve up a tasty meal. Burgers and hot dogs are grilled to perfection by Morty, also known as Mr. M. He has been serving up burgers for “a good 25 years or so,” he said. Students help serve lunch too. Everyone steps up to make the annual tradition happen. Then, students enjoy recess and everyone takes a well-deserved break outdoors. It is believed the tradition was begun by Mr. Jorgenson around 1995. Principal Mike Sparrow said, “It’s a great tradition, good food and a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise students.”

Addi Strong, Mr. M and Cheyanne Walch serve food to families as part of the end-of-year barbecue.
Sparrow shared that the school improvement goals the staff agreed upon this year were met. The administration set a 10 percent academic growth goal, which ended up being doubled.
“The kids performed well,” said Sparrow. This year, PVES worked on improving community relations and opportunities. A SeaWorld trip accomplished that, as well as service and leadership opportunities within the community back in April.
Sparrow’s major goal next year is to get a parent/teacher group organized. PVES is looking for parents to be involved in this group. They would also like to create a parent advisory board. Parents in the PTA would be involved in establishing PVES’ mission and vision. They would have input on school-wide activities, goals and initiatives.
Sparrow stated he has often been concerned at the bottom of the hill being a safety hazard as students cross the street. PVES would like to find parents who would be willing to volunteer time as crossing guards.
“I want to create partnerships, which in turn create endless learning opportunities,” said Sparrow.
