Panthers pummel Serpents

The Pahranagat Valley High School football team stayed undefeated with a road win over Mineral County on Friday, Aug. 29. The Panthers finished the first quarter leading 28-6, with the lone Serpent score coming on a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

By halftime, the Panthers led, 43-6. They rushed for 279 yards and threw for 134 yards. They were 5-for-9 on third down and 3-for-4 on fourth down. PVHS head coach Brett Hansen credited senior quarterback Jesse Stewart, junior running back Braxten Tsosie and senior running back Todd Hansen for his team’s offensive efficiency.

The Panther defense was also effective, allowing just 153 total yards and eight first downs. MCHS was 0-for-5 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth down. The only thing they didn’t do was take the ball away. Stewart and Tsosie played pivotal roles on that side of the ball as well, with contributions also coming from junior pass rusher Trueitt Staley.

While pleased with the performance, Hansen said his team still needs to improve on the fundamentals in practice. 

“Definitely need to get better at blocking and tackling and keeping the intensity for the duration of practice/games,” he said.

The Panthers play host to Indian Springs (1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.
