Lynx football works over West Wendover

The Lincoln County High School football team ran away from the Wolverines of West Wendover, 34-14, on Saturday, Sept. 6. 

The visiting Lynx scored 28 unanswered points in the first half before allowing a pair of scores in the second half.

Three Lincoln players combined for 364 yards rushing, with quarterback Kavon Almaraz leading the way with 26 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was a 95-yard scamper. 

Sophomores Mason Sinay and Daxton Donohue also scored rushing touchdowns, with Sinay carrying 13 times for 92 yards, and Donohue going for 61 yards on eight carries. 

“I was happy with our defense,” said Lynx head coach Kevin Hannig. “We got pressure on the quarterback and tackled fairly well. We had a lot of players get opportunities, and everyone stepped up and filled their role.” 

The Lynx defense was in the backfield perpetually, amassing eight tackles for loss and four sacks. Junior Ryder Stoker led the way with three sacks, and senior Ethan Kelson had four tackles with three behind the line of scrimmage.

Almaraz also had an interception on defense, as did sophomore Layton Stevens. Almaraz did throw two interceptions and completed just two of nine passes for 64 yards, but the Wolverines couldn’t stop the run, so the Lynx didn’t stop running. 

The Lynx (2-0) visit Milford (2-2, 1-1) on Friday night, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. The Tigers have yet to allow more than 20 points in a game this season. 

When asked what will have to happen to put points on the board against Milford, Hannig said, “We have to execute consistently. It starts up front. We have to know our blocking assignments and pass-block more effectively.”
