Lady Lynx wrestlers take second at Salt Flats Scuffle

Lincoln County High School sophomore Loeyn Biegel finished first in her weight class and earned 16 team points to lead her Lynx to a second-place finish at the 3rd Annual Salt Flats Scuffle, Dec. 19-20. Wells finished in first by just 1.5 points.

Biegel went 6-0, winning all six matches by pinfall. Her longest match was 3:37 against Dusty Uhlig of Wells, which was tied 7-7 before Biegel earned the pinfall victory.

Biegel’s classmate, Dani Petersen, went 5-1 and earned 12 team points en route to a second-place finish at 110-120 pounds. Her lone loss came to the eventual champion, Tegan Remington of Wells. Petersen won a 13-7 decision over Jazlee Correa of West Wendover and got her other four victories via pinfall.

LCHS senior Lizzy Kirchefer also took second in her weight class, going 5-1, with the lone loss coming via forfeit against Aubree Sumrall of White Pine. All five of her victories came by pinfall, including two over teammates Nash Ochoa and Emera Chavez. Ochoa took fourth, earning three wins and seven points, while Chavez finished sixth with three points.

Sophomore Emma Cole took third place at 122-132 pounds, going 4-2. She won 15-0 over Mercedez Malone of Carlin and earned three victories via pinfall. 

“Emma is a first-year wrestler who is doing well,” said LCHS head coach Grant Perkins. “The girls are doing well, but they have a tougher road to get to state than my boys do.” That’s because the girls aren’t broken into divisions and have to wrestle girls from all schools up to 5A, while the boys only wrestle other 2A schools.

The Lincoln County boys finished ninth, but were just one point from tying for seventh. Senior Jackson Free was the top finisher, taking second at 126-136 pounds. He went 6-1, with all six victories coming via pinfall. His lone loss came via pinfall with 30 seconds remaining in his match versus Vincent Cato of White Pine.

Classmate Benjamin Zierow took fourth at 156-164 pounds, earning a 16-5 major decision over Camden Goolsby of Wells and two pinfall victories. He was 3-4 in the tournament.

The Lynx wrestlers are at the Utah Winter Classic in Richfield starting Friday, Jan. 2.
