Both Pahranagat Valley High School basketball teams won their first league games of the season at Adelson on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
The Lady Panthers limited the Lions to 11 points in a 56-point rout. The boys won by 40, 69-29.
The PVHS girls were coming off a disappointing loss to Moapa Valley at home on Tuesday, Dec. 30. The 31-24 score doesn’t tell the whole story, as it was just a one-possession game at halftime. The Pirates’ height and depth eventually allowed them to pull away, though.
“Honestly, the main challenge I saw for us in the game was the height difference and our bench depth. We gave too many second chances in our rebounding opportunities and fell short in the height dynamics,” informed PVHS girls head coach Rebekah Steele. “We are also still working on getting into the game shape we need in order to play multiple girls on JV and varsity. The challenges of lower numbers require quite a bit of overlap. We have multiple girls who play both ways. It definitely takes time to build that stamina to play five to eight quarters, but we are getting there.”
The Pahranagat Valley boys were also coming off a disappointing loss at Tonopah on Saturday, Jan. 3. That was also a one-possession game at halftime, but the Muckers pulled away in the third and fourth quarters to win, 55-45. The Muckers amassed 14 steals and hit 50% of their two-point attempts.
“We had a good stretch right before the [holiday] break. I like the way we are getting out in transition and putting pressure on defenses,” said PVHS boys head coach Michael Strong. “For us to be successful, it starts on the defensive end, which opens up those opportunities to run.”
With the win over Adelson, though, the Panthers have won eight of their last 10 games. The Lady Panthers have won three of their last four after losing four straight.
The Lady Panthers host Laughlin at 6 p.m., and the boys are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9. Both teams are at Beaver Dam on Saturday, Jan. 10, with the girls tipping at 4 p.m. and the boys starting at 5:30 p.m.
