Caliente & LCSO enter interlocal agreement for code enforcement

January 16, 2026 by Jessica Hernandez

The City of Caliente and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have entered into an interlocal agreement that expands enforcement authority within Caliente city limits. Codes now enforced under the agreement include regulations related to fireworks, animals and disorderly conduct.

Lincoln County Sheriff Derek Foremaster also serves as the City of Caliente’s police chief, a role that allows the LCSO to carry out municipal law enforcement duties within the city. This authority is in addition to enforcement of all applicable Nevada Revised Statutes.

LCSO, working in coordination with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, is now authorized to enforce and prosecute select portions of the Lincoln County Code inside the incorporated City of Caliente. The agreement supports a partnership intended to ensure consistent enforcement of specified county ordinances within city limits.

Fireworks enforcement includes illegal or unsafe use as outlined in Lincoln County Code Title 5 Health and Safety, Chapter 1. Animal-related enforcement falls under Title 6, Chapter 1, which addresses animals running at large, dogs or livestock at large within city limits and vicious animals. Disorderly conduct enforcement follows Title 7, Chapter 4, covering disturbances that impact public safety or quality of life.

As part of the agreement, sheriff’s deputies may investigate reported violations, issue citations, make arrests when appropriate and work with the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute cases. Fines and penalties may be applied as outlined in the Lincoln County Code. Cases may be handled through the Meadow Valley Justice Court or another court of proper jurisdiction.

Officials noted that the agreement improves coordination between the City of Caliente, the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office, with the goal of maintaining public safety and consistent enforcement standards throughout the community. Residents with questions regarding code enforcement are encouraged to contact the appropriate city or county office for additional information.
