The Pahranagat Valley High School girls basketball team stayed undefeated in league play with victories at Laughlin on Friday, Jan. 23, and at Sandy Valley the next day.
The Panthers overcame 31 turnovers by logging 28 steals and grabbing 56% of defensive rebounds and 60% of offensive rebound opportunities to defeat Laughlin, 41-29. They hit just five of 13 free throws, which is something PVHS head coach Rebekah Steele wants to see improve before the playoffs.
“We are having a major focus on our free throws, as we are wanting to see improvements out of those results and still focusing on how high our turnover percentage is,” she said. “In the postseason, those two things are going to be critical stats.”
The Panthers also crushed the Sandy Valley Sidewinders 41-15 on Saturday, Jan. 24, which all but wrapped up the one seed in the Southern 1A playoffs. Steele said she intends to get players some rest and recovery over the final three regular season games, but an illness running through the locker room has complicated those intentions.
PVHS (11-8, 7-0) hosts Beaver Dam (9-8, 4-2) at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30. The Lady Panthers travel to Liberty Baptist Academy (3-11, 2-6) for a game at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Winning one of those games would clinch the top playoff seed since the Panthers swept second-place Laughlin in the season series.
