The Pahranagat Valley High School softball team improved its league record to 4-0 with a pair of blowouts over Tonopah in Alamo on Friday, March 20. The Lady Panthers put up 22 runs in game one and 21 in game two, allowing just one run in each game, which were both over via mercy rule after the top of the third inning.

The Panthers put up 10 runs in their first inning at bat, and 12 in their second time up. Pitching and fielding were problems for the Muckers, who allowed 14 walks and committed two errors. PVHS senior Hayden Canning crushed a double that drove in two runs. She’d later score. The Panthers drove in 10 runs with just two hits.

“One of the things we work on is having a strategy at the plate as hitters. This means we have far less chasing of bad pitches. We didn’t see a lot of hittable pitches in the first game,” said PVHS head coach Mike Sparrow.

Junior Evie Davis pitched three effective innings, striking out five while allowing just one hit and three walks. 

The Muckers got better pitching in game two, but the Panthers still plated eight in their half of the first and 13 in the bottom of the second. Senior Shada Spencer was 3-for-3 with three home runs and seven RBIs. 

“Second game we saw more pitches across the plate, and Shada definitely took advantage. She’s been in a little bit of a slump, so it was good to see her get good contact,” Sparrow said.

PVHS senior Hayden Canning was 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Shelby Fry pitched a clean inning for the Panthers, allowing just three walks. Davis was once again effective, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five.

The Lady Panthers (6-5, 4-0) host Sandy Valley (2-1, 2-0) at 1 and 3 p.m. on Friday, March 27.
