After sweeping a doubleheader against Indian Springs in Alamo on Tuesday, April 28, the Pahranagat Valley High School softball team now takes its perfect league record into its final regular-season games at Round Mountain on Friday, May 1.

The Lady Panthers scored six runs in the first, three in the second and nine in the third inning to mercy-rule the Thunderbirds 18-3 in game one of the doubleheader on Tuesday. The Panthers’ patient approach resulted in eight walks and six hits over the three innings. Two of those hits went for extra bases, however.

Senior Heidi Shumway had half of the hits for PVHS, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Classmate Lynda Hatch drove in a run with a double and scored twice, and fellow senior Shada Spencer also doubled and scored two runs.

Pahranagat Valley junior Evie Davis pitched effectively, scattering two hits and three walks, resulting in one earned run. She struck out four Thunderbirds. 

The Lady Panthers came back from a 2-0 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning and five-run fifth. Davis kept the Panthers in it by allowing just one hit and three walks over five innings pitched. Both runs allowed were unearned, and she struck out three batters.

PVHS senior Paisley McVey was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Shelby Fry also went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Hatch had a double, a single, two runs and three RBIs.

“We had some good things happen in yesterday’s games. We had a three inning lull offensively in the second game but got the bats going and finished the game strong,” said PVHS head coach Mike Sparrow. “Our first team goal is to go undefeated in league play. Our second league goal is to finish as region champions in next week’s tournament. Our third team goal is to finish the season as state champions.”

Pahranagat Valley (14-7, 12-0) will secure the top playoff seed in the Southern 1A with a win in game one at Round Mountain (10-3, 10-2) on Friday, May 1. Games are at 1 and 3 p.m.
