Alamo set to celebrate America’s milestone birthday

Lincoln County residents and visitors will have no shortage of activities during Alamo’s annual Fourth of July celebration, with events planned July 2-5 featuring sports tournaments, family activities, live entertainment, patriotic ceremonies and fireworks.

Festivities begin Thursday, July 2, with the 6th Annual Heat Scorcher Golf Tournament. Later that evening, “Alamo’s Got Talent” will begin with sign-ups at 5:15 p.m. and the show at 5:30 p.m. at the church pavilion. A volleyball tournament supporting PVHS volleyball will also take place at the town park, with sign-ups at 5:30 p.m. and games beginning at 6 p.m.

Friday’s lineup begins at 7 a.m. with mutton bustin’ sign-ups at the Alamo Rodeo Grounds, with the event starting at 7:30 a.m. The greased pig catch, hosted by Hiko Heritage Farm, will follow the mutton bustin’ events. Families can cool off during the free Slip’N Slide event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the town park. Friday evening wraps up with motorcycle and quad barrel races at the rodeo grounds, beginning with peewee races at 6 p.m., intermediate races at 6:30 p.m. and adult races at 7 p.m.

Saturday, July 4, begins at 6 a.m. with the Firecracker Fun Run/Walk at the town park in support of PVHS cheerleaders. A flag-raising ceremony will follow at 7 a.m. at the Veterans’ Monument, followed by a community breakfast supporting Christian Bible Fellowship at 7:30 a.m. at the town park.

The annual Wild West Parade begins at 9 a.m., with parade entries meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the firehouse. Elaine Shumway will serve as grand marshal. Parade categories include Most Patriotic, Best Use of Theme, Most Unexpected, Liveliest and Best in Show.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the town park will host food vendors, games, crafts, water slides and family activities. A cornhole toss tournament begins at 10 a.m., while children’s foot races start at 10:30 a.m.

Athletic events continue Saturday with the 3-on-3 basketball tournament beginning at 11 a.m. in the PVHS gym, supporting PVHS boys basketball. The money fire hose spray for children ages 12 and under begins at noon. A cowboy poetry and music gathering starts at 12:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Cultural Hall.

Families are invited to gather for a community picnic from 5 to 8 p.m. at the town park, featuring western-style games, hands-on activities, music, s’mores and family entertainment.

The Home Run Derby supporting the PVHS baseball team will hold sign-ups at 6 p.m., with the competition beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Alamo Little League Field.

The celebration’s biggest attraction, the Wild West Firework Show, begins at 9 p.m. at the Alamo Rodeo Grounds, followed by a dance party at 9:30 p.m. at the town park.

Events conclude Sunday, July 5, with a flag retirement ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Pavilion.
