Understanding what is on a nutrition label is one thing. Understanding what those nutrients actually do once they enter the body can be another.
Summer Lilly Salon and Wellness Clinic will host a Macronutrients Class offering area residents an opportunity to learn more about the role nutrition plays in everyday health.
Macronutrients, often shortened to “macros,” are the nutrients the body needs in relatively large amounts: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Each serves a different purpose and together they provide the energy and building materials the body needs to function.
Carbohydrates are a primary source of energy for the body, while protein provides amino acids used to build and repair tissues and supports functions throughout the body. Dietary fats provide energy, help form cell membranes and assist the body in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K.
Learning about macronutrients can help take some of the mystery out of nutrition. Rather than simply labeling individual foods as “good” or “bad,” understanding macros can help people recognize what different foods provide and how they can work together as part of a balanced diet.
That knowledge can also make nutrition labels more useful. Protein, total carbohydrates and total fat are all listed on packaged-food labels, allowing consumers to compare foods and better understand what makes up a meal.
Individual nutritional needs vary considerably based on factors such as age, activity level and overall health, and there is no single macronutrient balance that is right for everyone. However, learning the basics can give participants another tool for making informed choices about the foods they eat.
This class joins in a series of educational meetings hosted by the Summer Lilly Salon and Wellness Clinic team. Upcoming classes include an Anti-aging clinic and Esther Sessions starting in September.
The Aug. 18 program will include the class and accompanying program for $25. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at 25 Clover St., Caliente. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by calling 775-962-3412.
