The Lincoln County High School football team opened the season this Friday, August 14, at home against Parowan High School, taking the win 35-28. The Lynx limited the Rams to 61 rushing yards and a 3.2-yard rushing average per carry. They also forced a fumble by quarterback Tyson Bettridge.
Last year the Lynx were State semifinalists, defeating Lake Mead Christian Academy 58-21 in the quarterfinal before falling to the eventual runners-up from Pershing County. They finished the regular season 7-3 with a 3-1 record against Southern 2A teams. LCHS returns much of that team this year.
“We return 95% of our offensive production. Daxton Donohue is moving from the backfield to wide receiver,” LCHS head coach Kevin Hannig said. Along with Donohue, junior Mason Sinay returns as running back, and senior Ryder Stoker returns as tight end. Also returning is senior quarterback and reigning 2A Southern Region Player of the Year, Kavon Almaraz.
Almaraz averaged over 131 rushing yards per game, amassing 1,053 rushing yards on the year, according to MaxPreps, which ranked 15th in the state. His 13 total touchdowns ranked 25th, and his 27 yards per punt return was fourth-best in the state.
“We’re very excited about our team. We have some new starters on both sides of the ball, kids that have been in the program putting in the work, and now are going to get the opportunity to be every-down players,” said Hannig.
The Lynx start the league season at GV Christian on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. Their first league home game is Oct. 9 versus Lake Mead Christian Academy. The Lynx will host Needles on Oct. 16 and visit White Pine on Oct. 29 to close out the league season.
“Our family-oriented culture, set on the values of respect, commitment and accountability, is established and getting stronger. Our staff is committed, energetic and positive. We feel like this team can get over the hump and advance further than the state semifinals,” Hannig said. “In order to achieve that, we have to stay humble and committed to improving as people and players one day at a time.”
LCHS hosts West Wendover on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m.
