The annual Pioche Labor Day Weekend Festival is happening Sept. 4 – 7. This year’s theme is “Grit, Glory, & Forged in Freedom.”
For more than a century, celebrating Labor Day weekend in Pioche has been one of Lincoln County’s biggest weekends of the year.
The tradition returns Sept. 4-7 as Pioche hosts its 121st Annual Labor Day Festival. This year carries the theme “Grit, Glory & Forged in Freedom.”
The four-day celebration will once again fill the historic mining town with longtime traditions, friendly competition, live entertainment and events for all ages. The celebration has grown into an event that draws visitors from across the region and causes Pioche’s population to swell over the holiday weekend.
Events get underway Friday evening, Sept. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. with the Bingo Bash at the Pioche Fire Station.
Saturday, Sept. 5, will bring some of the weekend’s earliest competition. The 5K/10K Fun Run begins at 7 a.m. at Pioche Town Park. Golfers are invited to head to the Lincoln County Golf Course for the “Do It in the Dirt Classic.” The four-person golf scramble begins with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.
Throughout Saturday, visitors can make their way between events around town, including the Masonic breakfast, Labor Day craft fairs, trap shoot, MC/SXS/ATV barrel races, adult cornhole tournament, hay scramble and cake walk. The car and motorcycle show, chalk art and inflatables will stand alongside food trucks and vendors at Pioche Town Park.
Some of Pioche’s most recognizable Labor Day traditions will take center stage Saturday afternoon. Kids and adults will have their chance to compete in mucking, followed by the kids’ money scramble and chicken chucking. The Spillbedog Band is also scheduled to share live music from 4 to 6 p.m. at the park.
Saturday evening will include the All-Star Pioche Softball Mega Bowl and the LCHS Class of 1986 High School Reunion before the celebration moves uptown.
The height of Saturday’s evening activities starts with a street dance beginning at 7 p.m. on Historic Main Street. The Renegade Races are once again expected to draw crowds at 7:30 p.m. as Power Wheels come tearing down the street. The night parade follows at 8:30 p.m., with a drone show over Uptown Pioche closing out the evening at 9 p.m.
The celebration continues Sunday, Sept. 6, with another full day at the town park. The grass volleyball tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with teams of up to four players taking to four grass courts. Inflatables and bounce houses will be open throughout the day, while other Sunday traditions include the pet show, adult mining events and doubles horseshoe tournament. The action will also move to the Pioche Rodeo Arena Sunday afternoon for lawnmower, Power Wheels and mini bike races.
The Pioche Volunteer Fire Department’s Fireman’s Dinner begins at 4 p.m. at the fire station. The annual dinner is an evening to recognize current department members and show respect to honorary members. The donations raised during the dinner assist the volunteers in the work they do throughout the year.
Then, at 9 p.m., one of the weekend’s biggest traditions returns as the World’s Best Fireworks light up the sky over Pioche Town Park.
Monday, Sept. 7, starts at 6 a.m., before most attendees are awake, with the traditional Sunrise Dynamite Salute and the final day of the Masonic breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m.
At 10 a.m., spectators will line Historic Main Street for the Labor Day Parade, bringing the 121st celebration toward its conclusion.
Pioche Labor Day weekend has endured as a meeting place each year as families return, old friends reconnect and businesses prepare for one of their busiest weekends of the year. Generations have continued to share traditions that have become part of the identity of the community.
The history stretches beyond the modern events, with many of today’s familiar activities carrying forward the character of celebrations held decades ago.
This year’s theme, “Grit, Glory & Forged in Freedom,” coincides with America’s 250th anniversary, tying Pioche’s mining heritage and generations of local tradition into a celebration of the community that has kept the event alive for 121 years.
