took 15th out of 126 boys north of Sahara in the
season-opening night race in Las Vegas, Saturday.
Despite temperatures near triple digits, Lincoln County High School sophomore Bradley Pike ran his fastest ever 5k, finishing with a time of 17:06 at the Red Rock Running Company Invitational in Las Vegas on Saturday, Aug. 22. That time was good for seventh place among 126 boys who reside north of Sahara Avenue.
“The first race of the season is always very interesting. It serves as a reference point for where everyone is with their fitness levels. Given the very warm conditions, overall I was satisfied with our first race results,” LCHS head coach Lacie Pearson said. “We had some fast finishes by some of the students. Bradley Pike achieved a nine-second PR over his fastest time last season, and both he and his brother William finished in the top 15 in their race, which earned them medals.”
Senior William Pike finished the 5,000-meter race in just under 18 minutes. The meet record is 15:09.7, set by Kenan Dagge of Desert Oasis two years ago. Sophomore Mason Lamb finished in the top half of the pack with a time of 20:17 to take 60th.
The Lady Lynx took seventh place as a team, led by freshman Lillie Ivins, who ran a personal best 23:50 to take 39th out of 87 girls residing north of Sahara Avenue. Senior Sadie Ivins wasn’t far behind, taking 46th with a time of 24:23. Five seconds behind her was sophomore Kylee Graf in 47th.
Junior Kensley Bleak and sophomore Olivia Roisum both finished in 26:16, taking 63rd and 64th, respectively. Freshman Kynlee Lytle ran a personal best time of 26:35 to take 68th.
“We do have work to do going forward. I’m looking forward to cooler temperatures and faster times from all the students as the season progresses,” Pearson said. “We have strong runners on both our men’s and women’s teams, and I am anticipating a great season.”
Next up for the Lynx cross-country teams is the Virgin Valley Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 29. 2A and 3A schools will start at 8:05 a.m. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 90s until 9 a.m.
