Lincoln County first responders responded to 95 calls for service during the week of Aug. 24-30, with several noteworthy incidents involving traffic accidents, law enforcement investigations, a K9-assisted arrest and a commercial trailer fire.
During a traffic stop in Pioche, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office K9 Bowie conducted an open-air sniff and gave a positive indication. One individual was arrested as a result of the stop.
Deputies also responded to a theft call in Caliente that remains under investigation. Later in the week, law enforcement responded to an assault call in Caliente and a disorderly conduct call in Panaca. No arrests were reported in either incident at the time of the weekly report.
Pahranagat Valley Fire and Ambulance reported two calls during the week, including a commercial trailer fire and the vehicle-versus-cow collision.
Fire and ambulance crews were dispatched at approximately 12:41 p.m. Aug. 25 to a reported fire involving the load of a commercial tractor-trailer on a U.S. highway in the Alamo area, south of mile marker 24.
The truck driver had disconnected the tractor from the burning trailer, which was carrying concrete pavers. Attempts to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived were unsuccessful, and the fire kept rekindling.
Pahranagat Valley Fire responded with fire apparatus and a water tender. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol and Nevada Department of Transportation also assisted with the incident and traffic control.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the load still smoking and conducted suppression operations while monitoring for heat and additional rekindling. Traffic was temporarily stopped in both directions during portions of the response and periodically allowed through one direction at a time as conditions permitted.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
Pahranagat Valley Fire and Ambulance was called out again at approximately 9:20 p.m. Aug. 27 for a vehicle-versus-cow collision on State Route 375 in the Rachel area.
Initial reports indicated the vehicle was disabled and partially obstructing the roadway following the collision. The vehicle’s airbags had deployed, and the cow was also reported to be blocking the roadway.
The vehicle and animal were moved from the travel lanes before fire and ambulance personnel arrived. EMS personnel evaluated the vehicle occupant, who declined additional medical treatment and ambulance transportation.
After determining no further fire, rescue or EMS assistance was needed, crews cleared the scene while law enforcement remained involved with the incident and vehicle recovery.
