A piece of Pioche’s firefighting history will open its doors to the public during Labor Day weekend as the Pioche Volunteer Fire Department shares the progress of a restoration project five years in the making.
The department has been working to restore its historic firehouse on LaCour Street, a building originally constructed in 1876. The project has focused not only on keeping the nearly 150-year-old structure standing, but also on preserving its connection to Pioche’s early fire protection efforts.

The 1876 building will open to the public during Labor Day weekend, offering visitors a look at historic firefighting artifacts and memorabilia preserved from Pioche’s past.
With the restoration now nearing completion, the old firehouse will be open Saturday and Sunday during Pioche’s Labor Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Visitors can step inside the historic building and view artifacts and memorabilia from the original Protection Hose Company and the Pioche Volunteer Fire Department that have been preserved over the years.
The restoration has been funded entirely through donations, making the open house an opportunity for contributors to see firsthand what their support has helped accomplish.
While much of the work has been completed, the department said there is still more to be done and donations continue to be needed and appreciated.
The open house also gives Labor Day visitors another opportunity to experience Pioche’s history while many of the community’s historic sites and organizations welcome visitors throughout the weekend.
The restored firehouse itself offers a visible comparison between past and present. Historic photographs show the building’s earlier appearance, while the newly restored structure maintains its recognizable firehouse design, complete with its bell tower.
The Pioche Volunteer Fire Department invites both residents and visitors to stop by, explore the building and see a piece of local history that has served the community for generations.
